The month of July 2024 saw S.P.J Sadhana School participating in a prestigious International Conference.
The Principal, Ms. Fionika Sanghvi, and members of the staff, Ms. Tejal Kothari and Ms. Parul Mody attended the IASE 2024 Conference held in the Czech Republic. The theme at IASE (International Association of Special Education) Conference this year was "Inclusion". SPJ Sadhana School presented a paper on Vocational Skills as a step towards Inclusion. The paper entitled "Ability Enhancement Multimedia Programme (AEMP) to develop Artistic and Vocational Skills", and the presentation by Principal Ms. Fionika Sanghvi and Ms. Parul Mody who is a Computer Teacher and Coordinator for Graphics and Animation Training was very well received. The highlight of this presentation was to share our success in training and teaching 6 students who are now pursuing internships with companies on projects involving graphic designing and animation. This has been an innovative project on ‘Inclusion’.
Ms. Tejal Kothari presented at the Round Table, the topic of ‘Empowering Students for Inclusion and Honouring Diversity’. The presentation focused on how the school had attempted to create awareness on Inclusion in mainstream society through the school events such as the school concert, sports meet, exhibition, fashion show and art exhibition.
An Orientation was conducted for all the volunteers of the school, by the school psychologist, Ms. Kashmira Vazifdar. The orientation was aimed at helping the volunteers to understand the structure and the systems in the school. The orientation also aimed at helping them see how the education and training provided in the school is holistic. The rules of the school and the mandate to maintain the safety and security of the students, was also emphasised. The orientation was followed by a very informative question and answer session. The session ended with a sense of gratitude for the time and service invested by the volunteers for students with special educational needs.
The festival of Guru Purnima was celebrated in Sadhana School in a very meaningful way. A special assembly was presented on the topic of ‘Respect’ by the Prevocational Class followed by a special assembly on the topic of Gratitude by the Wood Art and Handicrafts Department. Respectful salutations were made to all the Gurus: God Almighty, Parents, and teachers, all mentors who have illuminated their paths and shaped them as individuals. A respectful tribute with humble salutations was paid by the Principal, Ms Fionika Sanghvi, who garlanded a picture of our former Principal and inspiring mentor, Sister Gaitonde. Gratitude was also expressed to the care workers of the school for their untiring dedication. The presentation at the special assembly through different modalities of performing arts included recitation of Shlokas, a skit and dance.
A Medical Camp was organised for the School by the Rotary Club of Bombay North and the Inner Wheel Club of Bombay North. The students were provided with a general check-up, an ENT check-up and an eye examination. The diagnoses and prescriptions were shared with parents for further treatment if required.
A visit was also paid to the School by Ms. Harsha Jain, a student in M.Ed. Special Education, at the Department of Special Education, SNDT Women's University. Her research required her to collect data from special educators in special schools, for the purpose of her dissertation. The topic of Ms. Jain's research is: "A status study on availability and sustainability of assistive technology in special schools in Mumbai". The data collected would surely enhance research in the field of Special Education.
Thus the month of July 2024 was enriched by conference presentations, orientations, celebrations, medical care and research.
