Updates for August and September 2019
CEREMONIES & CELEBRATION
On 23rd August 2019, Janmashtami was celebrated with great rejoicing in SPJ Sadhana School. The event was orchestrated by the Principal Ms. Fionika Sanghvi and saw the students celebrating by producing (and of course indulging in) all the food items loved by ‘Makhan Chor Krishna’. The celebration ended with a spirited breaking of the ‘Dahi Handi’ by the students.

On 13th September 2019, the Staff and Students of SPJ Sadhana celebrated ‘Teacher’s Day’ in school. The highlight of the fun filled day was the inclusion, for the first time, of students in the festivities – another innovative first by our Principal Ms. Fionika Sanghvi. The staff and students were delighted to welcome Ms. Geeta Gopal as Chief Guest. Geeta has been a long-time friend and benefactor of the school. The day commenced with the students of Works World Skills taking centre-stage with a well prepped dance on the ‘trials of studenthood’. The dance was followed by a ‘Bollywood Housie’ conducted by the staff of Visual Arts & Craft Department and Hospitality & Catering Department. To the delight of the students, the staff of Enhanced Learning Centre was pitted against the Office Procedure Course in “Kaun Banega Corepati” (with a twist). In the late afternoon, the PTA hosted ‘SPA-RTY!’ for the teachers and did them proud. A truly memorable Teacher’s Day.

EVENTS:
On 9th August 2019, a Special Assembly was held to commemorate Friendship Day. The Prevocational class performed a skit celebrating the values of ‘friendship’ through the immortalized friendship of Krishna and Sudama.
EXTERNAL EVENTS:
On 2nd August 2019, students from the Pre-Vocational and Visual Arts & Crafts Departments participated in ‘Splash’ an art competition organized by ‘Secure Giving’, where they could express themselves without any boundaries or pressures.

On 21st August 2019, the Principal, Ms. Fionika Sanghvi and Coordinator Ms. Tejal Kothari attended a discussion on “Starting Early: A focus on Early Childhood Education and Nutrition in India”, conducted by the Asia Society India Centre.

On 27th September 2019, Ms. Fionika Sanghvi and Ms. Simida Correia visited Lemon Trees Hotel Limited, New Delhi. Lemon Trees recruits students with special educative needs as a part of their business initiative. Hotel collaborates with ‘Action For Autism’ and ‘Muskan’ to spread awareness of individual with special needs and to give them a place in society. Ms. Sanghvi & Ms. Correia were welcomed by Special Educator Sunder who laid out the various strategies which were employed to direct the special students and the various activities in which they took part. The meeting was extremely fruitful as it offered in-depth insights into the working of the hotels.
HONOUR LIST:
On 28th September 2019, the Principal Ms. Fionika Sanghvi and Coordinator Ms. Simida Correia attended the Education World, India School Ranking Award at New Delhi. S.P.J. Sadhana School is ranked India’s #4, Maharashtra’s #2 and Mumbai #2 Special Needs Schools in the Education World India School Rankings 2019-20.
OUT REACH:
On 6th August 2019, nine M.Sc. students of Sophia College were orientated by Ms. Kashmira Vazifdar as a commencement to a volunteering session, which would enable the students to understand the relevance of Neurobiology in the area of rehabilitation. The session extends over a period of 30 hours and is a practical requirement for the course. SPJ Sadhana has extended this outreach facility to the past eight batches of the students.

On 13th August 2019, 53 students of Nirmala Niketan visited SPJ Sadhana School. They were oriented by Ms. Kashmira Vazifdar (Counsellor) in functioning, operational strategies and the role of a Social Worker in institutions’ for special students.

On 23rd August 2019, Ms. Fionika Sanghvi and Ms. Simida Correia conducted a talk on “How to deal with Down’s syndrome” at the behest of the Human Resources Department of the Shalimar Hotel.

The Principal Ms. Fionika Sanghvi was invited by the Rotary club of Bombay, Juhu Beach, as a guest speaker on 24th September 2019. She spoke about the training teaching and objectives of SPJ Sadhana School empowering students with special needs to be contributing and productive members of society. The movie ‘I’m Beautiful’ was appreciated by the audience. It was through this documentary that the audience was informed about Autism Spectrum Disorder. Rohan Puthli (student of the school with ASD) also joined the principal for this meeting and presentation. He showcased his talent and ability of visual and photographic memory by surprising the audience with his prompt replies of the ‘day’ in response to the ‘date’ asked. Our students are truly born winners - winners of the heart.

The Rotarians present are eager to visit the school to know more about the work done by the students and the training imparted for the differently abled.
SPORTS
On 9th August 2019, 3 students of the Office Procedure Course participated in Special Olympics Maharashtra Unified Football Tournament, at Lions Municipal Sports Complex. Congratulations! Aryaman Kumar, Sumit Singh & Anas Kagzi.

On 14th September 2019, 20 students participated in the 12th State Level Table Tennis Tournament in two categories. The students won 7 Gold, 5 Silver, 7 Bronze and 1 Copper Medals. Kudos to all our students!
WORKSHOP
On 26th September 2019, the staff of SPJ Sadhana attended a workshop held by Mr. Ramachandran D of Invention Labs. Mr. Ramachandran introduced ‘AVAZ’ a picture & text based communication app, empowering students with Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Down’s syndrome and other speech disabilities. The app is specially formulated to overcome language impairment, improve vocabulary and develop grammar skills. The app was adopted for use in order to provide extra tutelage for the students.
